UpdateContest is the single entry point for contest settings, from schedule and visibility down to each of the configuration blocks. Only fields named in the patch mask are written, and an empty mask writes all of them, blanking whatever the request left empty. It never moves the contest between statuses — the transition methods below do that — and it cannot change the format of a contest which already has submissions.
